Bank employees sacked for commemorating genocide

Two employees of Hatton National Bank (HNB) have been sacked for commemorating Tamil genocide.

The manager and an employee of HNB Killinochi branch organised a memorial on 18 May 2018 to pay tribute to 146,679 Tamils killed and made to disappear by the Sri Lankan state.

HNB’s management sacked both of them on Wednesday after their photos were published by Sinhala websites.

In a statement released to justify the sacking, HNB’s management said:

‘We regret an unauthorized incident that took place recently in one of our branches, which does not reflect the values of the Bank. The matter has been investigated and necessary action taken.

As a Bank that stands for all Sri Lankans, our goals, interests and initiatives are all aligned to the vision and greater good of our Country. HNB strongly condemns any act that is in violation of, or poses a threat to the morale of citizens of Sri Lanka.’
