Ethnic tensions escalate – state of emergency declared

Sri Lanka has declared an island-wide state of emergency following the escalation of ethnic tensions between the Muslims and the Sinhala Buddhists.

Violence broke out between the Muslims and the Sinhala Buddhists on Monday in Digana, Kandy, after a man was mercilessly beaten to death.

Tensions flared up again today after the recovery of another body in the area.

Meanwhile, in Akkaraipattu, Amparai, a group of Muslims protesting against violence by the Sinhala Buddhists attacked a Tamil man for photographing them. The man was saved by fellow Tamils who rushed to the scene.
