Freedom fighter Pon.Sivakumaran remembered

Today marks the forty-fourth death anniversary of Pon.Sivakumaran, the first freedom fighter to sacrifice his life in the Tamil Eelam freedom struggle.

Mr Ponnuthurai Sivakumaran, born on  26 September 1950, became actively engaged militant Tamil politics from 1969 onwards, joining the militant Tamil Student Federation in 1971.


He left the Tamil Student Federation in 1972 after it became a defunct entity.

Even then, he continued to pursue militant politics with the support of his friends, becoming an inspiration for young Tamil militants of that time, including the Tamil Eelam National Leader Veluppillai Pirapaharan.

On 05.06.1974, Mr Sivakumaran took his own life by consuming cyanide when he became trapped in a police cordon.
