Indian government accused of cover-up after shooting Tamil Nadu fishermen

Tension mounted in Tamil Nadu after India’s Ministry of Defence attempted to cover-up the shooting of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Indian naval forces.

On Tuesday, a group of Tamil Nadu fishermen fishing off the coast of Rameswaram were shot at by the Indian coastguard. Two of them, named Johnson and Pichai, were injured and admitted to Rameswaram Hospital.

The victims alleged that after firing at them, Indian coastguard officials took them into custody and beat them up for speaking in Tamil. They also claimed the coastguard officials ordered them to speak in Hindi, a North Indian language.

Refuting the allegations, India’s Ministry of Defence said in a statement today that Tamil Nadu fishermen were lying and no shooting ever took place.
