Kumar Ponnampalam remembered

The 17th death anniversary of Kumar Ponnampalam, the former leader of All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC), was marked at the offices of the TNPF today.

Mr Ponnampalam was a longstanding Tamil nationalist who voiced for the political rights of Tamils, both in Colombo and at international forums.


He was assassinated on 05.01.2000 in Colombo by Sri Lankan military intelligence operatives, allegedly on the direct orders of the then Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

In recognition of his service to the Tamil nation, Tamil Eelam National Leader V.Pirapaharan honoured him by posthumously bestowing him the title Maamanithar (Great Human Being).
