The man arrested in connection with the killing of Jaffna High Court Judge M.Ilancheliyan’s bodyguard has claimed that he was intoxicated at the time.
Sivarasa Jeyanthan (39), the suspect, surrendered to the police today.
According to Sri Lankan police sources, the suspect had given a statement claiming that he was drunk at the time of the incident and grabbed Ilancheliyan’s bodyguard’s pistol after he was challenged to do so by one of his cousins, who was also drunk.
The pistol then misfired, injuring Ilancheliyan’s bodyguard and another policeman, Jeyanthan has added.
The suspect is said to have joined the LTTE in 1994. but left the movement a few years later, and subsequently became an alcoholic, it is alleged.
Ilancheliyan’s bodyguard, a Sri Lankan police sergeant, succumbed to his injuries after being admitted to Jaffna hospital. He has posthumously been promoted to the rank of Sub Inspector.
