Clashes erupt in parliament as Sirisena refuses to backdown

Thursday November 15, 2018

Clashes erupted in parliament today as the Sri Lankan president refused to accept the no confidence motion passed by the former prime minister.

In a letter sent to the speaker yesterday, President Maithripala Sirisena said the no confidence motion passed against Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was unconstitutional as proper procedures had not been followed.

As parliament met today, violence erupted between parliamentarians; and at one point a rubbish bin, a folder and copy of the constitution were thrown at the speaker.
