George Fernandes, the former Indian defence minister and a supporter of Tamil struggle dies

Tuesday January 29, 2019

George Fernandes, the former Indian defence minister and a longstanding supporter of the Tamil Eelam liberation struggle, died today.

Mr Fernandes supported the Tamil Eelam liberation struggle since its inception, despite not being a Tamil.

During his tenure as India's defence minister, between March 1998 to March 2001, he reportedly told Tamil activists that whilst he remains the defence minister, the Sea Tigers, the naval arm of the LTTE, will not face any obstacles from the Indian navy.

It was during this period the LTTE scored spectacular victories against the Sri Lankan military, liberating 70 to 80% of the Tamil homeland.
