The former Sri Lankan defence secretary has come out with all praise for Muthiah Muralitharan, the country's renowned cricketer.

In an interview to the BBC on Wednesday, Mr Muralitharan claimed Sri Lanka is a Sinhala Buddhist country because the Sinhala Buddhists are the majority.

The cricketer also claimed that people are not concerned about democracy and rights but food.

In a tweet sent in response, Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the former defence secretary, said: 'Murali’s sentiments resonate with my beliefs that Sri Lankan leaders should work towards building this country and uplift the lives of the people - @MuttiahM you are an inspiration .'
