Indian PM shuns Islamist leaders, meets Tamil leaders

Monday June 10, 2019

The Indian prime minister had turned down a request for meeting made by Islamist leaders during his visit to Sri Lanka, whilst he met Tamil leaders.

Sources close to the Indian High Commission in Colombo said Mr Modi had turned down the request suggesting any meeting with Islamist leaders would inflame the rising ethnic tensions between the Sinhala Buddhists and Muslims in the island.

Completing his four-hour visit on Sunday, Mr Modi tweeted: 'Sri Lanka has a special place in our hearts.'

Earlier, Mr Modi met the Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
