Mahinda forms minority government; sworn in as prime minister

The former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been sworn in as prime minister.

 

Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa will lead a minority government under his brother Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who is the country's president.

 

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately tweeted: 'Congratulations and best wishes to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. I look forward to working closely with him for further strengthening fraternal India-Sri Lanka ties.'

 

Meanwhile, the former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will lead the opposition.
