Mahinda Rajapaksa routed

Tuesday August 18, 2015

The former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa failed to secure enough seats in the general election to become the country's next prime minister. The United People Freedom Alliance, of which the current President Maithiripala Sirisena is the leader and forced to give nomination to Rajapaksa, only managed to secure 95 seats, though Rajapaksa won the election in his constituency. In contrast, the United National Front for Good Governance (UNFGG) led by Ranil Wickeremasinghe, bagged 106 seats. It is expected the UNFGG would form the new government with the support of the Sirisena faction of the UPFA.
