Mass protests in Batticaloa against the appointment of Jihadist as governor

Friday January 11, 2019

Tamils have launched mass protests in Batticaloa condemning the appointment of a senior Jihadist as the governor of Eastern Province.

On 4 January 2019, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena appointed M.L.A.M.Hizbullah as the governor of Eastern Province.

Following the outbreak of armed hostilities between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE on 10 June 1990, Mr Hizbullah led a faction of Sri Lanka's Islamist paramilitary unit, the Jihad Group, massacring hundreds of Tamils.

His appointment as the provincial governor has angered Tamils, and mass protests were held throughout the predominantly Tamil inhabited areas of Batticaloa district today.
