Sajith's defeat will legitimise the Tamil call for statehood - Sampanthan

Thursday November 14, 2019

The leader of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has warned that Sajith Premadasa's defeat in the presidential election will legitimise the Tamil call for the creation of an independent statehood.

Speaking at an election rally held at Sangiliyan Park in Jaffna on Wednesday, Mr R.Sampanthan said his party believes that Mr Sajith Premadasa would fulfill his promise of maximum devolution for the Tamils if he wins the forthcoming presidential election, the Jaffna daily, Kalaikathir, has reported.

If Mr Premadasa is defeated and instead Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa comes to power, however, Tamils would not be able to achieve their goal of internal self-determination, and therefore their call for exercising the right to external self-determination would become legitimate under international law, the leader of the TNA added.

Mr Sampanthan's statement implies the defeat of Mr Premadasa would be in the interest of the Tamils, political commentators have noted.
