The Sinhala Buddhist monk who desecrated Niraviyadi Pillaiyar Temple, Mullaithivu, has claimed he was mentally ill at that time.

Niraviyadi Pillaiyar Temple, a historic Tamil Hindu temple, has in recent times become the centre of controversy, with some Sinhala Buddhist monks claiming it was the site of a Buddhist temple in the past.

A few weeks ago, a Sinhala Buddhist monk desecrated the Hindu temple by slashing down temple's holy Nandhi flags and their flagpoles.

Surrendering to Vavuniya High Court on Monday, the monk in question has pleaded through his lawyer that he had done so because he was mentally ill at the time of the incident.
