Sinhalese and Muslims clash; mosques, shops and houses set alight

Clashes have erupted between the Sinhalese and Muslims in North Western Sri Lanka, with mosques, houses and shops being set alight.


In Puttalam, a forty-two years old businessman was hacked to death during clashes on Monday night.


Unconfirmed reports say two more Muslims have been killed by mobs.


In Kurunegala district, the Islamic holy textbook, Quran, was set alight by Sinhala Buddhist mobs when they  launched attacks on a mosque.


The Sri Lankan police have imposed an island-wide curfew, including in the Tamil homeland, though no clashes have been reported there.
