Sinhalese-owned cafe bans the use of Tamil language

Tuesday October 29, 2019

A Sinhalese-owned cafe in Colombo has banned the use of Tamil language within its premises.

The notice placed by the Peppermint Cafe stating that, 'All staff must speak in English or Sinhala. Strictly no Tamil to be spoken,' has caused furor.

In response, the cafe's owners have claimed in a Facebook post that the ban was imposed after customers, presumably Sinhalese, complained that staff speaking in Tamil created the impression that they were making jokes about them.
