Sirisena accused of using homophobic comments against Ranil

A Sinhala journalist has accused Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena of using homophobic comments against Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Speaking at a party rally on Monday, Mr Sirisena said he was sick of seeing the government being run by butterflies, and thus decided to sack Mr. wickremesinghe and replace him with his predecessor Rajapaksa.

Commenting on the statement, Sunantha Deshapriya, a veteran Sinhala journalist, said the term 'butterflies' colloquially refers to gays in Sinhala; and by referring to Mr. wickremesinghe's government as butterflies, the Sri Lankan president had invoked homophobic comments.
