Sri Lanka plunges into constitutional crisis as Rajapaksa sworn in as Prime Minister

Sri Lanka has plunged into constitutional crisis after President Maithripala Sirisena appointed his predecessor as Prime Minister.

The appointment comes after months of speculation that Sirisena was planning to form a political alliance with the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and appoint him as the next prime minister.

Meanwhile, the outgoing Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe announced tonight that he is still the prime minister and his party will prove that it still commands majority in the Sri Lankan Parliament.
