Friday December 20, 2019

A Tamil political prisoner jailed for 13 years on charges of involvement in an assassination attempt on Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has been acquitted by the Court.

Mr Chandrabose Selvachandran was arrested in December under the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act 2000, and was held for 13 years in jail on charges of conspiring to assassinate Mr Rajapaksa, who was then the defence secretary.

Another Tamil political prisoner, Mr Sriskandaraja Sharma, a Hindu priest, who was also jailed in connection with the assassination attempt on Mr Rajapaksa, was acquitted in July 2018, over eleven-and-a-half years after he was jailed.
