Upcountry Tamils take to the streets, demand higher wages

Wednesday October 24, 2018

Tens of thousands of Upcountry Tamils took to the streets of Colombo today, demanding higher wages for tea pickers in the region.

Though tea from Sri Lanka's upcountry is a sought after commodity across the world, Tamil tea pickers in the region continue to be exploited by the Sri Lankan government and private companies subcontracted by state agencies.

Travelling from various parts of the Upcountry, and marching through the streets of Colombo, tens of thousands of Tamils converged at Gale Face, demanding the government to increase the daily wage for tea pickers to 1000 rupees.
