The US stepped up pressure on Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, demanding the parliament be reconvened immediately.

Speaking in Washington, Ms Nauert Heather, the spokesperson of the US Department of State, said: 'We call on President, in consultation with the Speaker to immediately reconvene parliament and allow the democratically elected representatives of the Sri Lankan people to fulfil their responsibilities to affirm who will lead their government.'

Ms Heather also urged all parties to refrain from engaging in violence.

The statement comes in the wake of a bodyguard of a senior UNP MP shooting dead a protester yesterday.
