Remove war memorials – Wigneswaran urges the Sri Lankan government

The chief minister of Northern Tamil Eelam has urged the Sri Lankan government to remove all of the war memorials in the Tamil homeland.

In a letter addressed to the Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, a copy of which has been seen by Tamil Polity, Mr C.V.Wigneswaran said Tamil people are slowly beginning to forget the horrors of war, and removing war memorials will contribute to this.

Welcoming the Northern chief minister’s statement, Tamil political activists said that for the vast majority of Tamils, who were subjected to mass atrocities and other human rights abuses by the Sri Lankan armed forces, war memorials built in the Tamil homeland by the government to honour the latter, continue to invoke memories of past atrocities committed by them.
