Sirisena vows to bring back the death penalty

The Sri Lankan president has vowed to end the moratorium on death penalty.

Speaking at an event held in Polanaruwa, President Maithripala Sirisena said his government has no intention of backtracking its decision of executing those convicted of committing drug related offences.

Mr Sirisena’s announcement comes in the wake of a warning by the EU that if the death penalty is implemented, Sri Lanka would lose GSP+ tariffs, which allow the country to export garments to ┬áthe EU without additional levies.
