Sri Lankan President’s party plays LTTE song to attract Tamil voters

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has inaugurated its election campaign in Jaffna by playing a popular LTTE song.

The song beginning with the Tamil lines ‘Nithiraiyo Thamila? Nee Nimirnthu Paaradaa’, was part of an album released by the LTTE after it captured Elephant Pass Sri Lankan military complex in April 2000, and had since then used it for recruitment campaigns.

The SLFP is a predominantly Sinhala political party and led by the current Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena.

Tamil activists in Jaffna who wanted to remain anonymous told the Tamil Polity that it is in an attempt to garner Tamil votes the SLFP is using the song of the LTTE, which it also calls a terror group.
