Tamils across the world today paid tribute to Annai Poopathi, who fasted unto death twenty-nine years ago.
Annai Poopathi launched an indefinite hunger strike on 19 March 1988 outside Maamangam Pillaiyar Temple, Batticaloa, demanding Indian troops to end the occupation of Tamil Eelam.
A month later on 19 April 1988, Annai Poopathi died, with the Indian government of Rajiv Gandhi ignoring her hunger strike, in the same way that it ignored the hunger strike of Lt.Col Thileepan and allowed him to die.
In Jaffna, a remembrance event was held today at the office of the TNPF.
In Navaladi, Batticaloa, where Annai Poopathi hails from, a remembrance event was held by civil society groups.
