Writ of habeas corpus filed by parents of 24 disappeared youth

The parents of 24 youth made to disappear by the Sri Lankan security forces 21 years ago have filed a writ of habeas corpus at Jaffna High Court.

In the first quarter of 1996, after their occupation of Thenmaradchy sector in Jaffna peninsula, the Sri Lankan security forces arrested 24 Tamil youth at Navatkuli and Maravan Pulavu.

Twenty-one years on, their fate remains unknown, with no action taken by the Sri Lankan government against soldiers and officers who arrested the youth.

Though a similar writ of habeas corpus was filed in 2002, ┬áSri Lanka’s politicised judiciary has not given a judgment on the petition, forcing the relatives to file another petition on Thursday.
